Mount Elgon residents cry foul over UHC neglect
Residents of Chepyuk Ward, Mount Elgon Constituency in Bungoma County, are appealing to the county government to build health centers in their area to enable them to access health services nearby.
The residents, especially pregnant mothers, say they face challenges in giving birth and getting quality health care even after former President Uhuru Kenyatta rolled out universal health coverage (UHC) across 47 counties on February 7, 2021.
UHC is one of the “Big Four” strategic pillars declared by former President Kenyatta, which aimed to provide medical insurance coverage for every Kenyan by end of 2022.
UHC is expected to have benefits such as enhancing treatment for HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and other deadly diseases; easing access to maternity and child care services; and providing free diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and drugs for common sicknesses.
However, some parts of the country are still facing hardship in accessing health services due to a lack of roads, infrastructure, education centers, and awareness.
In Mt Elgon constituency, which borders Uganda on the eastern part, there are still pregnant mothers who use old methods to give birth and do not have any knowledge about the Linda Mama program that provides free maternal care.
A spot check by NTV revealed that some women in Mt Elgon even give birth on the road while going to the hospital or inside caves without visiting a hospital. One of them is Brenda, a 15-year-old girl who was impregnated by a man while going to school in April last year. She delivered her baby while in a cave with no medical assistance.
Caren Wanyonyi, director of special programs in Bungoma County, said that they found two teen mothers who had given birth in a cave and that they need special treatment to take care of their babies and get back to school when they grow up.
“Please let us encourage our girls to be in school, the Lusaka administration has promised to support those who perform well in class, and educate a girl for a better society,” she noted.
She said that the county government is working with partners such as UNICEF and World Vision to improve health services in Mt Elgon. She also urged residents to register for UHC so that they can benefit from the quality and affordable health care.
