Milestone in Kirinyaga as Kerugoya Referral Hospital perform first spinal surgery

Surgeons at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital in Kirinyaga have performed the first spinal surgery at the hospital, registering a medical milestone in the county.

The surgeons carried out the delicate surgery on a 30-year-old man who had suffered spinal injury with lumbar vertebrae 1&2 fracture after falling from height while working.

The surgical operation was led by Dr. Robert Oluoch, Orthopedic Surgeon. The team of 10 specialists included an Orthopedic and Spine Technician, general surgeons, medical officers, an anesthesiologist and nurses.

Dr. Alex Kariuki, one of the surgeons who conducted the surgery said that the delicate surgery, that took the specialists five hours to accomplish, involved instrumentation and stabilization of the spine involving decompressive laminectomy of lumbar spine 1 and 2.

Kariuki added that since the vertebrae are crucial in protecting the spinal cord, such complex surgery required a multi-disciplinary approach.

He confirmed that the patient is in stable condition currently recovering in the general ward.

At the same time, surgery patients in Mt Kenya region can now breathe a sigh of relief after hospitals now embraces minimally invasive surgery technology where surgeries are done through small incisions thus reducing spilling a lot of blood and ensuring short recovery period thus saving money in terms of billing.

The accessibility of the new surgery technology in Embu now saves patients the agony of traveling all the way to Nairobi seeking specialized treatment.

According to Dr Kenneth Matu an orthopedic surgeon at Imara Hospital in Embu, the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) technology is life changing to the patients undergoing surgeries since it is less painful, ensures less tissue damage, less blood spilled and recovery period is short.

During orientation we found a patient undergoing knee surgery where the orthopaedic led by Dr Matu took journalists through the process of MIS technology and how it works.

The doctors are in a position to diagnose the problem faster using a miniaturized camera is inserted in the body and the image in transmitted to a screen to aid the surgeon to carry out the procedure effectively.

The surgeons are busy going through the screen to establish the problem and after some minutes they managed to repair the damage without even cutting body but only two small holes for the camera and the other one for surgery tool.

Dr Matu says the surgical technology is a great milestone and will save patients agony of seeking medical services in Nairobi and it will save time and money for struggling Kenyans.

He says the surgery which is conducted through small incisions using miniaturized surgical tools and cameras and according to surgeons it more effective compared to the normal surgeries done in theatres.

He says that the technology is very effective where a patients are left with small wounds and heals faster unlike the ordinary surgery which has great damage, painful and a patient takes longer to heal after being left with a big surgical wound.
