Meru, Tharaka Nithi elders on peace-keeping mission on disputed border areas
The Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders from Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties have agreed to collaborate with the government to help end the border conflict between the two counties that has led to the destruction of property and loss of lives for many years.
The elders held a long-day meeting on Thursday at Njuri Ncheke Shrine in Tigania East constituency Meru County under the mediation of the Department of Administration led by Regional County Commissioner Paul Rotich, Meru County Commissioner Fred Ndunga among other security leaders.
They resolved to reach out to their communities to border disputes and organise a meeting with the disputed area residents and select some elders and National Government administrators who would be a whistleblower.
Eastern Region Commissioner Paul Rotich said they will restart the land adjudication process which carries largely land ownership issues with issues revolving around border disputes which he said can be cured with the District and Province Act of 1992.
“For us to attain a long-lasting solution we have to involve as many stakeholders as possible, that is the strategy we are deploying multi-agency strategy and bringing in the leadership of all levels in both Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties”, Rotich said.
Elders led by the Chairman of Njuri Ncheke Council of Ameru elders said that they will ensure that there will be peace among the warring communities urging everyone to be calm and wait for the due process. The elders vowed that they would deal with whoever was found inciting residents to cause violence saying what they want is peace.
