Massive bhang bust burned in Isiolo

A large consignment of bhang was on Wednesday burned at the Isiolo Law Courts Grounds.

The bhang, with a street value of over KES 20 million had been seized as part of five court cases over the past six months.

The burning of the bhang was witnessed by top government officials, including the Chief Magistrate of the Isiolo Law Courts, Lucy Mutai, the CEO of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), Victor Okioma, and the County Commissioner of Isiolo, Geoffrey Omoding.

While addressing journalists, Chief Magistrate Mutai noted the negative impact of bhang, particularly on young people, and emphasized the need for all members of society to play their part in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

Okioma also highlighted the harmful effects of bhang, stating that it is the most problematic drug being abused in Kenya and contributes to numerous mental health issues affecting people throughout the country.

He praised the efforts of the police in intercepting the bhang as it was being transported from Ethiopia to Nairobi and other parts of Kenya, and the support of the judiciary in putting drug traffickers behind bars as a deterrent to others.

In addition to the burning of the seized bhang, Isiolo County Commissioner Omoding announced that security officers are using technology, including drone cameras, to monitor and track suspicious activity along the Yamicha-Merti route, a known trafficking route. This increased vigilance has reportedly led to a reduction in drug trafficking cases along the route.

Commissioner Omoding also stated that some of the bhang burned was seized within Isiolo town and its surroundings, and called for collective responsibility among all members of the public in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

The burning of the bhang in Isiolo comes as the Kenyan government announces a national crackdown on drugs, illicit brews, and counterfeit alcohol.
