Isiolo residents call for expansion of town library to meet growing demand
Leaders in Isiolo County have been asked to help expand the Isiolo Town Library which is struggling to accommodate the soaring number of users, especially school-going children.
Addressing journalists at the Library grounds during a back-to-school open fun day the Librarian in Charge Rufus Kithinji said that following sustained outreach programmes, the library had attracted a huge number of primary, secondary and college learners as well as civil servants, making the available space inadequate to accommodate the rising number of users.
Agnes Mukami, a teacher at Creation Academy and her colleague noted that there was the need to have larger halls, as some learners have to wait outside for those inside to walk out so that they can have a chance to access the library services.
They further called for the establishment of more libraries at Sub County level, at least one in Garbatula and another one at Merti in order to enable those in the other sub-counties to also have access to Library Services.
Regarding outdoor activities for children using the Library, the teachers called for the preparation of the available ground in order to enable the kids to carry out their activities with ease.
Githinji also noted that the facility offers free computer classes for students who have completed secondary school education, calling upon those eligible to register for the free course.
He noted that many youths in Isiolo have been lured into drug and substance abuse due to peer pressure and idleness, calling upon parents to advice their sons and daughters to make better use of their time by seeking services from the library.
