Isiolo Governor suspends all development projects, to focus on drought response

Isiolo County Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has put on hold all development projects in order for his administration to focus on drought relief.

Governor Guyo told the media at a County Steering Group Meeting that it was critical to prioritize human life, adding that no sensible administration would continue to implement development projects when some residents face death due to hunger.

He stated that all available resources and efforts will now be directed toward humanitarian help to protect people and cattle from the extended drought.

“As a County government, we will suspend all projects because our priority now is to safeguard our people and their animals,” Guyo said.

Earlier, the Governor launched a fleet of trucks to distribute humanitarian food to 24,000 disadvantaged households across the county’s 10 wards.

He did, however, point out that, according to the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), at least 30,000 people were in desperate need of food aid, therefore the foodstuffs he had just mentioned were insufficient.

He promised the inhabitants of Isiolo that the remaining 6,000 impacted homes would receive their portion by the end of this week.

Isiolo North MP Joseph Samal, who also attended the County Steering Group meeting, urged the various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are also involved in drought response measures in the county to join forces and harmonize their activities with those of the government in order to avoid duplication, in which some areas benefit from relief measures more than once while other affected people remain unreached.

Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding, who co-chairs the County Steering Group with the Governor, stated that social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook groups would be created for each ward in the County, and that Chiefs and Ward Administrators would post names of Cash Transfer and relief food program beneficiaries so that members of the public could interrogate the list for transparency.

He invited members of the public to report any incidents of those on the list who do not deserve to be there in order to guarantee that only the most vulnerable members of the community receive cash transfers and relief food items.

Isiolo County is one of the most hit by the current lengthy drought, with certain sections still without rain for three straight seasons and facing a fourth without it. Some pastoralist families have relocated to distant places in search of pasture and water for their cattle, affecting school learning.
