Ijara MP calls on State to distribute more relief food to drought-hit families
Ijara Constituency MP Abdi Ali together with the Turkish Embassy distributed relief food to over 2000 families that are worst hit by the drought.
While distributing food stuffs, the legislature reiterated on the need of upscaling drilling of boreholes as well as water tracking to far fetched areas.
“We are somersaulting through a lot of challenges right now, most of our livestock died and that’s the only hope for pastoralists. As a result of that, our area is recording high number of school dropouts. There’s need to come to the rescue of this people.” He said.
Over a thousand families received food items comprised of milk, maize meal, wheat flour, rice, beans, sugar and cooking oil.
Speaking on Monday at Masalani, the MP urged the locals to embrace alternative source of income like farming as metrological department predicts more rain in the coming weeks.
“For so long we encroached on pastoralism alone, this drought taught us some lessons. We need to get prepared and embrace change, I ask every person here to start farming. We have large areas of land but for nothing.” he added.
He further asked the parents to let children go to school and promises the government and other non-governmental organization be there to assist the community and asures the residents that no community member in his constituency will die for hunger.
He also called the government to start the school feeding programs that will enable many children to at least come back to ask as he say hunger is the one that’s contributing to high number of absenteeism.
