Homa Bay chief questioned over death of elderly woman
Five people including a chief are being questioned by police over an incident, where a 60-year-old woman died at her house in Rangwe, Homa Bay County, under unclear circumstances.
The chief who was recently appointed was apprehended by detectives from Homa Bay police station after he allegedly failed to give security officers a clear report of the death incident in his location.
He was arrested alongside four other men who participated in taking the body of the deceased to a mortuary.
Residents reported that the chief gave the green light that the body of the elderly woman be transferred from her house to the mortuary.
According to Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne, the five men who hail from the same area in Rangwe took the deceased’s body to a private mortuary using a private car.
Kinne said the chief reported after the body had been moved from the house.
The law requires that such cases be reported immediately to the police for investigation.
Kinne said investigators who went to the scene discovered blood stains at the house. They now suspect a cover-up.
“There was also an indication that the house was cleaned to conceal evidence of an attack. She could have been murdered,” the police commander said.
Kinne said the body of the deceased had started decomposing by the time it was taken to the said private mortuary.
Investigators said the woman had died three days before the body was discovered.
The woman was living alone at the time of her death.
“We appeal to members of the public to cooperate with police as they investigate the matter,” the police commander said.
The five suspects were released on police bond.
