Grade five pupil among two shot as bandits raid Baringo village
Two people, including a ten-year-old boy, were shot by bandits in Yatya village, Baringo South on Friday morning. The attackers also made away with 42 heads of cattle belonging to the locals.
The boy, a grade five pupil, was herding livestock with three other men when the bandits ambushed them from a nearby bush. He sustained three gunshot wounds and was rushed to Kabarnet hospital for treatment. One of the men, Musa Chesir, was also injured and taken to Marigat sub-county hospital.
The incident happened three days after another attack in Kagir village, where one person was killed and over 200 goats were stolen by suspected raiders from a neighboring community. On Wednesday, the same group of bandits raided Chemoi village in Baringo North and drove away over 100 heads of cattle.
The residents of Yatya village said they heard gunshots and ran for their lives as the bandits struck. Thomas Kiburet, a witness, said the attackers waited for an armored personnel carrier that was patrolling the area to pass before launching their assault. Hezron Kandie, who escaped unhurt from the scene, said he saw about 60 raiders armed with guns.
The attacks have raised security concerns in Baringo County, which has been plagued by cattle rustling and inter-communal clashes for years.
The leaders and residents of Baringo North and South have urged the government to reinstate National Police Reserve personnel in the sub-counties, saying that security officers sent there are not enough to protect them. They have also called for more peace initiatives among the warring communities.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are currently conducting a security operation in the region to flush out the bandits and recover stolen livestock.
