Ford Kenya’s David Wakoli Wafula is poised to become the Senator of Bungoma after provisional results show that he is leading the race having garnered just over 50,000 votes.
The results are from seven of the nine constituencies in Bungoma.
Wakoli is followed by Former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga with just over 37,000 votes and Azimio-backed Wafula Wamunyinyi with just over 18,000 votes.
The results thus far have come from the Kabuchai, Bumula, Webuye East, Sirisia, Tongaren, Webuye West, and Kanduyi constituencies.
Kimilili and Mt. Elgon constituencies’ results make up the remaining totals.
Wakoli leads in five constituencies.
Voter turnout in the Bungoma senate election was low as the battle for supremacy over Western Kenya’s political landscape was played out in the mini-poll.
Less than 50 percent of eligible voters were present in the majority of the constituencies that produced preliminary results.
The winner of the contest will succeed Moses Wetangula, who has since been appointed speaker of the National Assembly.
