Embu doctors issue strike notice over lack of medicine, equipment in hospitals
Embu County doctors have issued a 21-day strike notice accusing the county government of a bad working environment, and lack of medicine in hospitals and equipment.
While addressing the press in Embu town on Tuesday, the doctors said they were tired of pleading with the county leadership to better their working environment saying they had reached the apex.
Led by Kenya Medical Pharmacist and Dentist Union Secretary General Dr Davji Attella, the medics accused the county government of failing to enable doctors to work effectively.
Attella said the worsening situation in the county’s health facilities comes amid low remuneration for the doctors. He termed the trend as bad manners saying it cannot be tolerated in any employment sector.
The SG further said the county had completely failed to remit statutory deductions for the doctors and many were losing property to auctioneers
He observed that Embu County has only eight doctors and a deficit of about 300 doctors calling on the county leadership to move with speed and address the challenge.
His sentiments were echoed by Dennis Mugambi, the chairman of KMPDU in the upper Eastern who said doctors in Embu county have not been promoted for the last ten years.
Mugambi said their hope was that they would see a change after the new leadership took mantle in the county but that was not forthcoming.
