Embu doctors call off strike after agreement with County govt
Normal health services resumed in all health facilities on Friday after Embu doctors called off their strike and returned to work.
This is after agreeing with the county government on how their grievances that prompted them take an industrial action will be resolved.
In a joint press conference that brought together the county Governor Cecily Mbarire, officials from Embu department of health, Embu county secretary and the leadership of Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentist Union (KMPDU) upper Eastern the doctors agreed to have a bi-partisan committee to address the issues raised.
Among the issues that were agreed to be effected immediately is promotion of senior doctors who have attained 55 years of age and above.
After six hours of negotiations, the county government and the doctors agreed that there is serious shortage of about 50 doctors where an agreement was made that when a doctor exits service from Embu county the funds will be made available to employ a new doctor to avert future shortage.
Further the doctors made a deal to have absorption of the nine contracted doctors to permanent and pensionable terms using the funds which were being paid to doctors who have retired for the last one year .
It was agreed that the county will clear all the pending remittances amounting to Sh278 million in the next budget cycle.
The agreement will also see more reforms done in the health department within the county for better working environment for doctors.
“The Council of Governors have met with the vendors of the imaging machines at Embu level 5 hospital and agreement is that the CT scan machines will be reinstated .
This is part of our effort as county to better working environment for our doctors,” said Mbarire.
For the Doctors who had gone for the industrial action to push for their grievances, it was as well agreed no one will be victimized for their action.
Dr Dennis Mugambi who is the KMPDU branch chairman in upper Eastern called on all the doctors to deliver quality services since they have come up with a document that will guide how their issues will be addressed.
“We have decided to suspend the strike and I ask the doctors to report to work as we continue our discussion with government,” said Mugambi
