Control maize prices, Wetang’ula urges govt
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has appealed to the government to control maize prices in order to cushion farmers from exploitation by middlemen.
Addressing county residents in the presence of President Ruto at the Chepkurkur grounds in Bungoma County, Wetangúla said farmers in the area rely on maize for their livelihoods but noted that brokers have taken advantage of uncontrolled prices to exploit them.
“Farmers are asking the government to stabilize farm gate prices for maize. They want to sell their produce at a minimum of Sh120 per two kilograms,” he said.
He added that the misfortunes in the sugar sector were hitting farmers hard, making most of them rely on maize production to earn a living.
He then lauded President Ruto’s administration for lowering fertilizer prices from Sh7,000 to Sh2500, citing that the initiative has led to increased food production in the region.
He noted that the Sh500 million industrial park that the president is set to launch will be a game changer in the region.
“The industrial park would revolutionize the agricultural sector in the region. Farmers will earn more from value addition initiatives,” he noted as he called for expediting construction of the project.
President Ruto is on the third day of his development tour in the Western Region. In his Bungoma tour, he was accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Governor Ken Lusaka, and other top government officials.
