Safaricom launches M-Pesa Go targeting 10-17 year olds
Today, November 26, Safaricom launched M-PESA Go, a new financial solution for kids and preteens aged 10 to 17 years at Two Rivers Mall in Kiambu County.
In an event graced by ICT CS Eliud Owalo, Safaricom said the service aims to empower parents and guardians to raise financially healthy children who are prepared for a cashless world.
M-Pesa Go will let users to send and receive money, purchase airtime, and bundles, use Lipa na Mpesa services, and access a modified version of the M-Pesa Super App dubbed as the M-Pesa Go App.
“As M-PESA we are committed to empowering and transforming the lives of everyone, and in M-PESA Go, we are providing a revolutionary product designed for youngsters, but with oversight by parents or guardians. Leveraging the M-PESA Super App, we plan to introduce a financial literacy platform that will equip children with tools for managing money,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
To safeguard users, M-PESA Go restricts services such as withdrawing money, access to digital loans, and betting or forex payments.
To sign up for M-PESA Go, parents and guardians can self-onboard an already registered SIM card via https://safaricom.com/mpesa-go/onboarding or visit any Safaricom outlet. They will be required to have an active SIM card registered on M-PESA, a valid identification document as well as the child’s birth certificate.
Once registered, juniors can download and use the M-PESA Go App, a modified version of the M-PESA Super App, a digital lifestyle platform with expanded M-Pesa functionality, and a slew of mini-apps.
The M-Pesa Super App, which includes monitoring and tracking tools as well as parental control features such as setting transaction limits, will help parents and guardians to lead their children’s financial path.
Kodris Africa, the provider of Kenya’s first-ever government-approved coding programme, is also available on the M-Pesa Super App, and according to Safaricom, parents who purchase an annual Kodris Africa subscription through the M-Pesa App over the next 60 days will receive a 50% discount.
