Milestone as Lamu Port makes first local shipment, 15,600 goats, sheep to Middle East
The new Port of Lamu on Friday prepared to make its first local shipment, a consignment of 15,600 bulls, goats and sheep destined for the port of Salalah, Oman, for consumption in the Middle East.
While announcing the major milestone, KRA Commissioner of Customs & Border Control Lilian Nyawanda said the clearance for export gives a much-needed vote of confidence for the new facility.
“This is a milestone in the history of the Customs and Border Control Department in Kenya,” Nyawanda said.
“The Customs team at the Port is working round the clock in conjunction with the Multi-agency team to facilitate the timely clearance of the Cargo.
Lamu port was launched last year following delays linked to funding shortfalls and the operalisation of the three berths.
In June this year, Kenya turned to port operator Dubai Port World (DP World) to manage Lamu Port due to a lack of capacity at the state-run Kenya Ports Authority.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani said DP World was among port operators being explored by the government as potential private partners to run the new port.
The vessel expected to ship the Livestock, MV Banyas 1, docked at the port of Lamu at around 10.00 am on Friday, awaiting the loading of the consignment of 200 Bulls and 15,400 Goats, and Sheep for transportation.
This move was welcomed by livestock sector players who believe the shipment will encourage locals and other investors to invest in the sector, hence opening up the economies of semi-arid areas in Kenya and the East African Region in general.
