Manufacturers urge government to industrialize agriculture sector
Manufacturers have called on the government to revive and industrialize the country’s agriculture sector. The call was made during the launch of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Manufacturing Priority Agenda (MPA) 2023.
The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Investment Promotion, Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, noted that the government has prioritized various value chains to drive industrial growth, including leather, textiles, dairy, edible oil, and pharmaceutical sectors.
The government plans to achieve this by establishing County Aggregation Industrial Parks across all 47 counties.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of public-private dialogue to improve the business environment in the country. He stated that the National Investments Council would drive investment attraction by attracting, facilitating, and enabling investments.
KAM Chairman Rajan Shah observed that although there are endless opportunities for value addition in the agriculture sector, they remain largely untapped. The low-value addition has made it impossible to realize the full potential of the manufacturing sector, denying citizens extra jobs, wealth retention, and incentivization of the sector to increase production and economic growth.
Shah called for an enabling environment through sound policy, regulatory, and institutional frameworks that foster forward and backward linkages, dynamic economies of scale, and innovation.
The MPA, an annual publication that guides KAM’s advocacy efforts with the government and its agencies, will be themed “Resetting Manufacturing to Achieve Agenda 20BY30” this year. It will be guided by four pillars: global competitiveness, export-led industrialization, SME development, and industrializing agriculture.
