The Watchlist: Nafsi, White Lotus, Succession and The King

Here’s our weekly streaming watchlist:

Nafsi

Nafsi follows a couple, Aisha and Seba’s attempts to conceive a child and the ripple effects it has on their relationship and friendships.

Made by Kenyan director Reuben Odanga, Nafsi follows Aisha and Seba as they entangle their friend Shiko, who unwittingly offers help as a surrogate, in their relationship.

Shiko also experiences a myriad of challenges in her relationship with boyfriend, Clarence, as previous cracks widen and deepen. This timely social critique explores the toxic side of millennial relationships and is a must watch all the people who ask “why is the divorce rate so high these days?”.

Nafsi is now available on Netflix.

White Lotus

Created in the height of the pandemic this 6-part mini-series follows the experience of a group of holidaymakers who arrive at the White Lotus hotel on the same day.

The show starts by informing the audience that someone is dead. Our job as viewers is to follow the characters, fall in love with some and hate others as we wait for the shoe to drop.

The show is anchored on excellent writing and pacing as well as good performances that make it fun to watch. The dry humour and a rather shocking sex scene place it firmly in the adults only binge box.

You can binge Season 1 to catch up as season 2 is released weekly. Watch it on Showmax.

Anatomy of a Scandal

In this mini-series, a British woman’s world gets turned upside-down when her cabinet minister husband confesses to an affair and informs her that the details will soon be public. Things get worse for them both when he faces charges of rape.

A very public trial leaves her questioning everything: she tries to make sense of her new reality by looking back at her history with fresh eyes.

This TV series is a mystery box that tackles themes such as marital fidelity, the fairness of judicial systems and the definition of sexual abuse and consent.

There are six 45-min episodes and the suspense will have you watching one after the other. Watch it with your adult friends, as this one is worth a discussion. It’s available on Netflix.

Succession

If you haven’t heard about Succession, now is the time to get into it. The show is centred on the fictional Roy family who are loosely based on media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his family.

This show is a gritty look at what it takes to make and retain extreme wealth. The colour palette and the camera movements give it an unsure Italian gangsta movie vibe, a la the Godfather movies. However, instead of actual gangsters, the Roy family patriarch Logan, uses his wealth as a tool of mass destruction. His enduring casualties are his under-developed children with employees and the general public catching stray bullets.

If there is a show that captures the moment in history we live in its Succession. Some say it’s a comedy some it’s a drama, I say it’s adult viewing.

Binge all 3 seasons on Showmax.

The King

This is a movie based on Shakespeare’s Henry V.

Disillusioned and debased by his father and the ravages of war, we follow Harry, AKA Hal as he walks the hero’s journey to find purpose and eventually the title of King Henry V.

The writing in this movie flows with ease, and the battle scenes – often tiresome in other movies – help push the narrative along, making this an easy and entertaining watch. Another strong argument for this movie is the formidable acting by Timothee Chalamet, Robert Pattinson and Lily-Rose Depp.

Shakespeare was a master storyteller, and this movie does his work justice. The King isn’t family viewing unless you have a fully adult family. Watch it on Netflix.

The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time is a good movie. Current Spiderman Tom Holland is in it, and that alone should merit at least 10 mins of viewership. Now, let me put some of you off the film.

Set in the American South, this movie is an exploration of evil vs good. Why do bad things happen to good people?

If conniving pastors, child sexual abuse, domestic abuse and gun violence aren’t themes you are interested in exploring, give this movie a hard pass. However, if you wonder why some people attract evil and if life’s happenings are acts of God, coincidental or karmic, this is a fascinating movie for you.

It is suspenseful and original in its plot. Packed with heavy-hitting actors, good writing and agile editing, The Devil All The Time is more arthouse than blockbuster but is full of thrills that’ll keep you interested till the end.

Watch it on Netflix.
