The Defiant Ones
This documentary follows the careers of two of the most influential men in popular music: Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
The two unlikely friends – Dr. Dre from a predominantly black City of Compton and Jimmy Iovine an Italian-American from Brooklyn, New York – reshaped the music industry through a partnership that saw the rise of Hip Hop from a niche genre to the mainstream success of the early 2000s.
Following their success, the two decided, over a lazy afternoon overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the veranda of Dr. Dre’s Malibu beach house, to create Beats by Dre which they sold for a record breaking billion-dollar amount.
The deal catapulted Dr. Dre from the musical back burner to the fore of Hip-Hop culture as the genre’s first billionaire.
The Defiant Ones features interviews from their families and collaborators, and is a peek behind the curtain at the creation and growth of Beats by Dre.
Although it is self-congratulatory, and sweeps under the carpet the domestic abuse claims levied against Dr. Dre, the documentary does offer insight to what a little defiance, a tone of bullishness and mastery of one’s talents can get you.
Generation Wealth
Money, Money , Money.
Once upon a time, people were concerned with keeping up with their neighbours; now, people are obsessed with Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Photographer Lauren Greenfield has spent her entire career photographing the rich.
Fascinated by the Beverly Hills life she grew up adjacent to, Lauren set out to document the 90210 set: the children of Hollywood’s elite.
20 years after her deep dive into her subjects, including a teenage Kim Kardashian, Lauren revisits her life’s work with a mind to understand why America, and the world at large, is obsessed with extreme wealth.
As she takes stock of her vast catalogue, and reconnects with her subjects 20 years later, Lauren discovers that like the people she’s been observing and to some degree judging, she too has an obsession that is unhealthy and generational.
This documentary raised questions in my mind about what I hold dear, and where I picked up my likings and desires.
This documentary seeks to answer one question: Why are people the world over obsessed with the people on TV?

Chasing Happiness
Keeping in the “people on TV” vein, this next documentary is about the Jonas Brothers.
I must confess that the Jonas Brothers are a little after my time. For the oldies like me, the they are a pop music band made up of three brothers; they sing, and play instruments and were once the hottest thing in the teen-o-sphere.
Many years, a break-up and a few marriages later the boys’ get the band back together and re-examine their early struggles from community rejection to extreme fame.
I love the this documentary. It’s got a lot of love, and a real story to tell.
