Comedian Nasra Yusuff raises KES 600,000 to feed drought victims, blasts leaders for neglect
Kenyan comedian and singer Nasra Yusuf has raised over half a million shillings to feed Kenyans affected by drought in North Eastern.
Nasra, who is of Somali origin, visited the region recently and saw how people were struggling to survive without food or water. She decided to start a fundraiser on social media, asking her fans and followers to donate whatever they could to help the drought victims.
In less than a week, she managed to raise over KES 600,000, which she used to buy food items such as rice, beans, flour and cooking oil.
She then distributed them to hundreds of families in Wajir County, one of the worst-hit areas by the drought. Yusuf said she was moved by the plight of the people in North Eastern Kenya, who have been neglected by the government for years.
She also slammed some leaders from the region for allegedly misusing public funds to build malls instead of addressing the needs of their people.
“So North Eastern leaders can do a KES 50 million plus fundraiser to build a mall but can’t do the same to FEED their people? In less than a week, I have used my platform and I have raised over KES 600,000 and fed the people! Retweet this until they see it and go back to their dying people,” Nasra exclaimed.
Yusuf’s initiative has been applauded by many Kenyans on social media, who praised her for her generosity and compassion.
They also called on the government to do more to assist the people of North Eastern Kenya, who have faced recurrent droughts and insecurity for decades.
Yusuf is a popular comedian in Kenya. She rose to fame after participating in Churchill Show.
