President Ruto rewards loyalty with Cabinet picks

President William Ruto’s picks for Cabinet are a mixture of fresh blood, kept promises, and rewards for loyalty.

With his announcement of the Cabinet, the President has rewarded some of his most vigorous campaigners and strongest supporters.

Professor Kithure Kindiki is a name that catches the eye. He was thought to be in the running to be Ruto’s deputy before Rigathi Gachagua was selected for the slot.

The former Tharaka-Nithi County Senator has been given one of the most powerful dockets in the country, the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

He is set to work closely with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Another name that draws attention is that of former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi who has been appointed to be the country’s, Attorney General.

Muturi is a name that was seriously considered to be Ruto’s running mate and despite not clinching the spot, his loyalty for Ruto did not waver. Having served as judge and parliamentarian, now he adds to the list, serving in the Executive.

Some nominees to the Cabinet sort different offices in the August 9 polls and lost but that has not stopped President Ruto from rewarding them.

From Aisha Jumwa who unsuccessfully contested for Kilifi Governorship to Mithika Linturi who sort to dethrone Kiraitu Murungi.

Despite her criticism, Aisha Jumwa has risen to the executive to hold the Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action docket.

Jumwa’s bid to succeed Amason Kingi as Kilifi Governor failed, and despite hinting to head to court, she conceded defeat. She garnered 65,893 votes against Gideon Mungaro’s 143,773 votes.

The former Kilifi County Women Rep and Malindi MP will now control a ministry whose cumulative budget is an estimated KSh. 16 billion.

Jumwa is still fighting to clear her name in court after she was charged with allegedly killing an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party supporter in 2019.

Moses Kuria the party leader of Chama cha Kazi (CCK), ditched Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition for Kenya Kwanza and has reaped big. He has been tapped to head the Ministry of Trade.

Just like Jumwa and Linturi, Kuria challenged UDA’s Kimani Wamatang’i for Kiambu Governor and lost.  The outspoken politician had said he would take a break if he lost in the August polls.

“In the unlikely event I am not elected, you will not see me in politics again let alone seeking to be nominated. There is life beyond politics,” he said.

Mithika Linturi failed to unseat Kiraitu Murungi and will now head Kenya’s food basket. He has been appointed to head Agriculture and Livestock Development taking over from Peter Munya.

Former immediate Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has also been handed the role of heading the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs ministry. The two-time governor and party leader of Maendeleo Chap Chap chose wisely when he decided to side with Kenya Kwanza and will now get another opportunity to remain in government.

Cabinet Secretary sits have often been political sits with the holders of these offices being friends to the government of the day.

Ruto’s government is no different, and while the President reserves the right to chop and change the cabinet at will, his desire to achieve what he and Kenya Kwanza outlined in their manifesto will at some point come into play, necessitating him to look beyond political ties.
