Saba Saba death: 12-year-old girl killed by bullet inside family home in Kiambu
In a quiet home in Ndumberi, Kiambu County, a heavy feeling of grief now hangs in the air. What was once a place of warmth and laughter has been transformed into a scene of heartbreak following the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Bridget Njoki while she was watching TV in her living room.
Her mother, Lucy Ngugi, still shaken, recounts the final moments with her daughter.
“We were just sitting together when I heard a strange sound,” she says, her voice heavy with emotion.
It was just after 6:20 pm on Monday evening. Ms Ngugi and Njoki had stayed indoors, seeking safety as the Saba Saba protests raged outside. But even behind locked doors and iron sheet walls, tragedy found its way in.
According to neighbours, a bullet tore through the roof and ceiling of the house. Speaking to NTV, Josephat Waiiti, a resident, recalls the chilling moment:
“We don’t know where the bullet came from. It hit the iron sheet and left a hole in the ceiling. The child was just sitting there, watching television,” he said.
At first, Ms Ngugi didn’t realise the severity of Bridget’s injury.
“I saw blood on her hand and thought it was just a cut,” her mother says. “But when I looked closer… there was a hole in her head. That’s when I screamed. Her father came running,” she added.
Bridget was rushed to nearby St. Bridget Hospital, but the news was devastating; doctors found a bullet lodged in her skull. Nothing more could be done.
Now, the family is left with only questions. Who fired the shot? Was it the police? A stray bullet from an unknown source?
The police have since visited the home and started their investigation. National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga described the incident as tragic.
“This is an unfortunate incident,” he said. “However, the National Police Service has not yet determined what happened. Investigations are underway.”
The death toll from Monday’s protests has since risen to 31, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). In a press statement issued Tuesday evening, the commission also reported 107 injuries, two cases of enforced disappearance, and 532 arrests recorded.
But in Kiambu, patience is growing thin. Ms Ngugi and her family are demanding answers, and justice.
“I want justice for my daughter,” she said.
“But even if I get it… will they bring her back? They won’t,” she added
Njoki’s body is now at Kiambu Mortuary while her family prepares to bury a daughter who was taken from them too soon. She was shot in the one place she should have been safe: her home.
