Knife-wielding Garissa MCA storms restaurant as patrons flee – Caught on CCTV
A Garissa County Assembly Member caused tension by causing a commotion at a restaurant at the weekend.
Armed with a knife, Mr Noor Farah, the Jarajila MCA, caused a scene in a Garissa town restaurant at about 5pm on Saturday, shortly after attending the Garissa Cultural Festival.
CCTV footage shows customers running into the restaurant before the MCA, who was armed with a knife, followed them.
Inside, people ran for their lives as the seemingly MCA chased two women who had entered an inner room.
“It was shocking as things turned chaotic with everyone running for safety. I was at the counter only to see a man holding a knife storm in, sending everyone scampering,” Mr John Otwake said.
Mr Otwake, who works at the restaurant, said that the armed man chased everyone outside, then returned.
“He was in the hotel earlier and placed an order before he left briefly. It was not immediately clear why he came back armed with the knife,” Mr Otwake said.
“We had about 50 people inside here, enjoying their meals after attending the Garissa Cultural Festival.”
Ms Saadia Hage, who witnessed the incident, said she was shocked.
“I was sitting with a friend when two women came in screaming, only to see a man chasing them armed with a long knife. We hid in a small room until we were sure it was safe to go out,” she said.
Ms Hage called on security agencies to deal firmly with the MCA.
“If these are the kind of leaders we have, then we should not expect our county to develop. It was a huge disappointment,” she said.
After chasing people out of the restaurant, the MCA is seen on CCTV saluting and marching out like a trained police officer.
He then rushed to Garissa Police Station, where he reported an assault and claimed that he had been attacked. Detectives accompanied him to the scene.
“We reported him for causing disturbance and endangering lives within our facility. The police are investigating the incident,” said a worker at the facility, who requested anonymity.
They said that they had lost more than Sh50,000 in the commotion, as customers had left without paying their bills.
Mr Mohamed Abdi Farah, the Leader of Majority at the Garissa County Assembly, said, “I am yet to understand what was wrong with him, but I understand his family has taken him to hospital for a medical check-up.”
When contacted for comment, the Garissa County Police Commander, Mr Amos Ambasa, said that they were unaware of the incident as no report had been made.
The Sub-county Criminal Investigation Officer, Mr Kimathi Mutonga, also said he was not aware of the incident.
However, the Nation has seen the two OBs relating to the incident: one in which the MCA reported the assault, and the other in which the restaurant management reported the disturbance.
