Roysambu bishop urged to return Ruto’s Sh20m amid graft allegations
Bishop Edward Mwai of the Jesus Winners Ministry has been asked to return the Sh20 million he received from President William Ruto, following claims that the money is linked to proceeds of crime.
Ruto donated the funds to the Roysambu church last Sunday to support the construction of a new place of worship. However, four Kenyans—Kennedy Kariithi Gachenge, Lempaa Soyinka, Fanya Mambo, and Peter Kuira—through Ndegwa and Ndegwa Advocates, have written to the bishop demanding that the money be surrendered to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In their letter, they acknowledge that churches are often built through harambees but express concern over public servants donating large sums without transparency.
“They appreciate that churches and other places of worship are constructed and built by congregants and other well-wishers, through harambees. They, however, are concerned, especially where a public servant makes or purports to pledge huge sums of money towards such a cause.”
They further claim that the Sh20 million could be proceeds of crime or unexplained assets, citing a report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP):
“That the Sh20 million shillings that was bequeathed to Bishop Edward are or were proceeds of crime, or they fall within the definition of unexplained assets, having been donated by an individual who was on the 30th of December, 2024, ranked as the second most corrupt citizen of the world by the OCCRP.”
They also point out that Ruto’s official salary is Sh1.4 million per month, as per the Salaries and Remuneration Commission Act, yet he has not disclosed any other sources of income.
Meanwhile, speaking at the Jesus Winners Ministry on Wednesday during an overseas job recruitment drive, Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua praised the bishop for calling on the government to hold the exercises at his church.
“I urge other pastors to emulate the good example of this church, which has educated people, brought youths to get jobs, and approached the government to advocate for the youth.”
Mutua took a swipe at clergy members who criticize the president in public.
“Let’s leave the noise to politicians. The role of pastors is to observe politicians when they insult each other, when they bring foolishness, when they bring nonsense, to call them and tell them this is how you should live respectfully. But if a pastor starts talking like a politician, criticizing the president publicly, then what’s the difference between him and an MCA who insults others?”
Ruto’s donation also comes despite his own ban, issued six months ago, prohibiting politicians and government officials from making cash donations at harambees.
The president has since pledged to organize another Sh100 million fundraiser for the church’s construction, a move that has sparked mixed reactions. In response, some Kenyans have vowed to storm the church this Sunday in protest.
