Policeman in South Sudan’s Kiir security detail arrested after shooting incident in Gigiri
Police have disarmed and arrested a policeman attached to the Nairobi residence of South Sudan President Salva Kiir on suspicion of shooting and injuring a fellow officer on Tuesday night.
A police report on the incident indicated the suspect was found seated outside the residence along Gigiri Road on February 25 by two officers on patrol. He was allegedly smoking what they believed to be bhang but ran away when confronted by his colleagues before he reportedly shot at them.
“Officers on patrol came across the suspect sitting under the shade at the edge of Salva Kiir’s residence wall. As they approached him, the suspect started running away defying their orders to stop. He responded by firing at the officers whereby he shot one of them on his right hip,” a police report seen by Nation said.
He was later identified as a General Service Unit (GSU) officer and arrested with his official Ceska pistol also confiscated. The suspect was detained at Gigiri Police Station.
The injured officer was taken to MP Shah Hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is said to be in a stable condition even though a bullet head is still lodged in his left thigh. Nation Africa is withholding his name for privacy reasons.
Nation has contacted the Police spokesperson for comment on the incident but he had not responded by the time of publishing this article.
The latest shooting comes just days after a police constable attached to a blue-chip company’s CEO’s security detail allegedly shot and killed his colleague following a disagreement as they were leaving a bar in Ruaraka, Nairobi County.
The dead officer, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua from the GSU, was accompanied by his brother when he reportedly became involved in an argument with a fellow constable at around 1.30am on Saturday, February 22 in Ruaraka. A fight is said to have broken out before the constable allegedly drew his firearm and shot Constable Wambua, killing him on the spot.
The body of the deceased was moved to Kenyatta University Mortuary as the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
