Bigambo: “It’s time to move on, President Kenyatta”
President Uhuru Kenyatta Monday broke his echoing silence on his estranged deputy’s victory in the presidential election.
In a 7-minute, 24-second address from State House, Nairobi, the President did not mention his successor, William Ruto’s name, much as he said he would honor the implications of the decision of the Supreme Court to uphold his friend-turned-foe as the winner. This has attracted criticism from wananchi and pundits alike.
Political Analyst Javas Bigambo, speaking to Nation FM Tuesday morning, chimed-in on the matter, saying that “Kenya is not the first democracy neither is it the last. We have seen all over the world where out going Presidents, have supported different persons from different parties and their preferred persons lost and the same Presidents go on to congratulate the winners.”
He drew parallels on the situation for deeper context, ” This example can be drawn from the United States of America’s case where President George W Bush and President Barack Obama’s preferred candidates lost. In this case we know that president Uhuru Kenyatta preferred Raila Odinga as his successor which was not to be. After the declaration of the presidential election results on August 15th, President Uhuru Kenyatta has not spoken a word which is a misstep on his part.”
The closest President Kenyatta got to acknowledging president-elect Ruto’s victory was in a generalized message to various winners in the polls. “I want to wish well all who have won as they guide our country into the future and I thank you all for the opportunity to serve…”, the head of state said.
He took time to call for consistency in the Judiciary terming elections as a process.
President-elect William Ruto is set be sworn-in on Tuesday, 13th of September, 2022, not earlier than 10:00am and not later than 2:00pm, as per the Constitution.
