Kaptagat residents storm police post after officers caught slaughtering stolen cow
Police are on the spot for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a cow inside Kaptagat Police Station in Keiyo South in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The two officers were busted on Monday morning as they prepared their botched early Christmas feast after residents, who were looking for missing stock, stormed the station.
The irate residents of Koibarak village surrounded the station and barricaded Kaptagat – Eldoret road as they demanded arrest of the two officers.
They alleged that this was not the first case of cattle theft by the law enforcers as they claimed that there has been a tendency of livestock disappearing under unclear circumstances.
The suspects had to flee from the mob that baying for their blood. Police shot in the air in a bid to disperse the surging crowd at the station.
They claimed that their efforts to get help from the station following upsurge of stock theft in the area has been futile.
“Our cows have been disappearing under unclear circumstances whereby police have been reluctant to investigate the incidents. Today’s incident has confirmed that police are behind this syndicate,” said John Kiptoo, a resident of the Flax area Kaptagat location.
The slaughtered cow belonged to an elderly woman who demanded that the government compensate her.
“This was my only cow, it is valued at Sh100,000. I am not interested in stories and demonstrations, I want to be compensated for my cow,” said Mary Barmasai, 72.
Her sentiments were echoed by her daughter Joyce Kandie who accused police from the station of failing in their mandate of protecting life and property.
Ms Kandie said efforts to get help from the officer in charge of the station had proved futile, with officers at the station refusing to record statements from the family.
“Police from this station were reluctant to record our statements until the county commander had to intervene,” said Ms Kandie.
Acting county police commander John Njoroge said two suspects had been arrested in connection to the incident as he urged locals to remain calm pending investigations.
Mr Njoroge pleaded with residents to clear Kaptagat – Eldoret road to avoid inconveniencing other road users.
“No one is above the law. We have already arrested two suspects in connection to this incident, for now I urge residents who have blocked the highway to clear it and allow us to continue with our investigations before arraigning the suspects,” said Mr Njoroge.
Chepkorio Member of County Assembly (MCA) John Kimeli said residents were demanding the transfer of all police officers from the station.
“For long time we have been receiving reports that police officers from this station are working in cohort with criminals, especially livestock thieves,” he said.
Mr Kimeli said for the last three months, cases of stock theft have been increasing in the area.
He said the local police were suspected to be behind increasing cases of criminal activities in the area as he called upon the Inspect General of Police to transfer all police officers from the station.
While calling for calm among the locals he accused police officers from the station for failing in their duties of maintaining law and order instead they are now becoming criminals.
