Uproar over Governors’ extravagant swearing-in budgets
As the swearing ceremonies of 45 governors dominate the airwaves, questions over the amounts of money spent on the events are being raised.
According to the controller of budgets Nairobi, Homa Bay, Trans Nzoia, and Machakos counties have requested amounts ranging from Sh17 million to Sh22 million for the single-day event.
Of the 45 Governors, 11 were re-elected for a second consecutive term, 25 are new while 7 were among the pioneer county bosses but lost the seats in 2017.

President-elect, William Samoei Ruto, has endowed Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja’s swearing-in at KICC.
At the same time, Deputy President-elect, Rigathi Gachagua is expected to grace Mutahi Kahiga’s swearing which will set back Nyeri residents Sh5 million in an event expected to host 5000 guests.
Nairobi county has rolled a red carpet for the incoming governor, with seasoned journalists, Massawe Japani and Jimmi Gathu as MCs and Nyashinski performing.
The single-day event will last at most four hours, leading many to wonder whether the money would be well spent elsewhere. The new governors will face an uphill battle in pending bills and the runaway wage bills.
The high spending at the swearing-in ceremonies comes at a time when reports show that pending bills owed by county governments total Sh139.5 billion.
Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Wajir, Machakos, and Tana River are among the counties with the highest level of pending bills at Sh84.01 billion, Sh5.12 billion, Sh4.29 billion, Sh3.82 billion, Sh2.80 billion and Sh2.41 billion, respectively.
