Three Kabarak University students arrested over colleague’s death
Three fourth-year students at Kabarak University have been arrested in connection to the death of their friend Derrick Malumasa Sabuni, a third-year nursing student.
The three are said to have been the last people seen with the deceased.
Derrick Sabuni’s body was found with stab wounds near Kampi Ya Moto trading centre on the Nakuru-Mogotio road.
A team of senior detectives visited the scene of the crime, where the body of the 23-year-old was found and collected pieces of forensic evidence as they sought to crack the case.
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Rongai boss Donnata Otieno told the Nation that the suspects were taken into custody to assist in the investigation and provide insights into the events leading to Sabuni’s death.
According to Otieno, the suspects who were in the company of Sabuni claimed they were attacked by two individuals and subsequently rushed the victim to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
“Their story does not corroborate the findings of investigations done so far. There is no doubt they were friends and we have since recorded statements from witnesses. They were presented in court under a miscellaneous application, but the court ordered they be released on cash bail since they are fourth-year students. We are continuing with our investigations and they will be charged in a court of law,” Otieno said.
A detective involved in the case revealed that a revisit to the crime scene raised suspicions that Sabuni might have been stabbed elsewhere and his body dumped at the roadside.
The police indicated that the absence of bloodstains or signs of a struggle at the scene suggested that the fatal incident occurred elsewhere.
The motive behind Sabuni’s murder remains unknown.
His belongings were reportedly missing from the scene, intensifying the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death.
“We are saddened to lose one of us mysteriously. This is the second time we have lost a student. We just plead with the police to enhance security by patrolling the area. I am also urging fellow students to be cautious. We do not know who will be next,” one student said.
Expressing grief, another student called for enhanced security measures and urged fellow students to remain vigilant.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Kabarak University, marking the second time the institution has mourned the loss of a student under mysterious circumstances.
