Ruto: Demos won’t stop me from speaking against corruption in judiciary

Two days after members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) protested outside President William Ruto’s office following his attacks on the Judiciary, the President said he would not be intimidated.

President William Ruto maintained that no amount of castigation for his stand on corruption in the judiciary would stop him from speaking against the vice in the corridors of justice.

“Our country has been held hostage for a long time by vested interests, incompetence, and corruption. Some are wasting their time demonstrating in the streets instead of engaging in farming to reduce the cost of living,” he said in Naivasha Town.

President Ruto added: “I’m ready to face anybody so that we can change this country for the better. I will deal firmly with corrupt people whether in judiciary, executive, or the legislature.”

Dr Ruto was speaking in Naivasha  Town, Nakuru City, and Molo Town when he launched a series of development projects.

Ruto faulted those who have been castigating him for speaking out about the corruption in the judiciary.

Dr Ruto dared those opposed to his criticism about the corruption in the judiciary to deny publicly the existence of the problem in the critical executive arm of the government.

“I will continue speaking out on the matter [corruption] as well as fight the same,” said President Ruto.

He added: “I want to challenge the opposition to tell us whether or not there is corruption in the judiciary. The truth is there is and we must be ready to confront it.

President Ruto maintained his defiance of the court orders by vowing to continue with his programmes despite the constitutional interpretation and intervention of the courts.

Ruto reiterated his commitment to root out corruption in arms of government which he said is derailing the progress of the country.

Ruto noted that the country has been plagued by corruption, incompetence, and people with conflicts of interest and he said his government will decisively deal with the problem.

“We must change this country by confronting the evils of corruption, incompetence, and conflict of interest head-on. We shall not allow a few people to derail the progress of this country by engaging in these ills,” said Ruto.

He said affordable housing and the setting up of the Special Economic Zones are aimed at creating employment opportunities for millions of youths while the universal Health Coverage programne is aimed at reducing the cost of healthcare services.

Ruto said investors at the Naivasha Special Economic Zone will enjoy competitive power tariffs of Sh5 per kilowatt hour.

“The Naivasha SEZ, in particular, will enjoy a low-cost tariff as well as access to a fully operational Internal container terminal served by SGR,” he said.

President Ruto was speaking during the launch of the 90 MVA Naivasha Special Economic Zone substation in Maai Mahiu.

The station is expected to power more than 200 firms that will be set up at the 1000-acre facility.

According to the President, the program is in line with the government’s Bottom Up Economic agenda to transform the country into an attractive investment destination and a leader in green energy.

At least six companies have already been approved to set up facilities in the zone.

President Ruto issued licence certificates to the six firms from Kenya, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Japan, and  Switzerland.

President Ruto said the six firms have already mobilised Sh24.4 billion and created over 2,600 jobs.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir challenged the investors to take advantage of the incentives and opportunities to invest in the zone.

“As a country, we have reduced tariffs to make them competitive in the global market. Any serious investor who needs to be in the right place competitively should rush to invest here,” said Chirchir.

The SEZ authority chief Executive officer Kenneth Chelule said more firms have already expressed interest in investing in the zone.

Meanwhile, President Ruto announced that the Government is planning to construct 10,000 affordable housing units in Nakuru County.

He said that the project will create employment for at least 20,000 youths from Nakuru.

He spoke during the commissioning of 605 units of affordable housing at Bondeni.

He said that the just concluded project created employment for more than 3,000 youths from Biondeni Kivumbi and Flamingo who were prone to crime to make ends meet.

He said that his Kenya Kwanza government is keen on creating employment for millions of youths.

The president said that at least 120,000 youths have benefitted from the affordable housing projects across the country.

He said more than 300,000 youths will benefit by the end of the year.

He said the affordable housing project and the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is unstoppable.
