School principals summoned as Knec, TSC launch probe into withheld KCSE results
School Principals who had the KCSE results withheld due to claims of irregularities have been summoned for questioning as some of the affected candidates seek redress from the National Examinations Appeals Tribunal.
They are to appear before a committee set by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to shed light on what would have led to the withholding of results for the over 4,000 candidates.
According to reliable sources at the Ministry of Education, the process kicked off on Wednesday and is to be completed before the lapse of the 21-day complaints period.
“They are expected to explain what transpired when the national examination was going in the respective institutions and what would have resulted in the withholding of the results,” said a source who requested not to be named.
According to the Nandi County Director of Education Harrison Muriuki, the withheld results would be made public within 20 days as directed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu when he released the results on Monday at Moi Girls, Eldoret.
Mr Muriuki called for patience among parents and students affected by the withheld results to enable KNCE to complete investigations.
Among the affected schools include St Marys’ Tachasis Girls and Samoei Boys, both in Nandi Hills sub-county and Santa Maria Girls Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
In Nandi Hills, a section of parents led by area MP Bernard Kitur yesterday held a crisis meeting with the Samoei Boys High School Principal Julius Kimosop and the Board of Management (BOM) on the next cause of action.
“The Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examination Council should have concluded investigations into the claims of examination irregularities before releasing the results,” said Mr Kitur.
Samoei Boys posted admirable results in the 2022 KCSE examination ranking second to Kapsabet Boys in Nandi county.
In Tinderet sub-county parents petitioned the National Examinations Appeals Tribunal to hasten the process of resolving the matter.
In Elgeyo Marakwet County students of Santa Maria Girls Secondary School had their results withheld. The school administration could not be reached for comment.
According to CS Machogu, a total of 4,113 candidates were involved in examination irregularities in the 2023 KCSE Examination.
“The Council has canceled results of four cases of reported impersonation after completing investigations. The results of the remaining 4,109 candidates who were suspected to have engaged in examination irregularities have been withheld pending the completion of investigations into their cases, within 20 days,” said the CS at Moi Girls, Eldoret.
He disclosed that 120 contracted professionals were involved in aiding examination malpractices and that firm disciplinary action would be taken against such teachers.
The Ministry of Education has set up a functional National Examinations Appeals Tribunal and urged the aggrieved to seek redress through the Tribunal.
