Not left behind: Meet women in construction of Sh270 million affordable housing units in Kirinyaga

Young women from Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga county are among many who are earning a living through construction of affordable housing projects across the country.

In Kianyaga town where one of the projects is ongoing, several young women have gone against all odds to do construction works which is assumed to be predominantly for the male gender especially in Mt Kenya region.

Gichugu affordable housing project has employed 140 young people where 30 percent has been reserved for women who have chosen to defy stereotypes.

Earning Sh600 daily the women are taking up space in the project.

Two of the young women working in the project are Rose Wanjiku and Jane Kariuko who have been given a chance in construction of 110 affordable housing units.

Jane Kariuko and Rose Wanjiku have hailed the government for launching the project which they claim has made it possible for them to earn a living and support their families.

Kariuko says that many people from Kirinyaga especially women shy away from such manual jobs while others believe that such jobs are preserve of men.

She says that the project has played a big role in protecting youth from engaging in drug abuse and alcoholism since they are busy.

She says that they are taking advantage of the affordable house project as women since they can now work hand in hand with men without discrimination.

Rose Wanjiku says that they are doing all manner of jobs in the site ranging from mansion, wood working, fitting metal bars among others.

The young women say they can now get some money to support their young families as well as pay school fees ahead of reopening on January, 8 2024.

Speaking during inspection of the project Director of affordable housing and marketing in the ministry of housing Gakuru Muchiri said the project which started in August this year is expected to be completed in 48 months.

Gakuru said the project will have five blocks with 110 units ranging from three bedroom, two bedrooms and studios which will be constructed at a cost of Sh270 million.

He lauded that project for offering various job opportunities direct and indirectly to residents of Gichugu adding that no materials will be sourced from outside Kirinyaga.

He added that youth have also been contracted to make doors and windows which in return transform the economy of Gichugu and in the end residents will benefit with the houses.

According to the contractor Eng Samuel Wambugu of Belfast engineering works, out of 145 workers only six workers have been sourced outside Kirinyaga county adding that even the materials are being sourced locally.

Wambugu says that he has increased their pay for casual workers to Sh600 from Sh500 while mason earn Sh1,200 from Sh1,000 per day.
