Raila hints at backing Kalonzo in 2027
Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has hinted that he will pass the baton to Kalonzo Musyoka and support him in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Siaya during his brother Oburu Oginga’s 80th birthday celebrations, Odinga praised Musyoka for being a loyal ally and trusted friend.
“Miongoni mwetu hapa mtu atasimama. Tutasimama kidete na ndugu Kalonzo Musyoka, yeye ni mwaminifu (Among us here, someone will vie for the presidency. We will stand with our brother Kalonzo Musyoka, he is trustworthy), “Mr Odinga said.
This signals a change of tack and strategy in their political camaraderie that has seen Kalonzo Musyoka back Odinga’s presidential bid in the last 3 general elections, twice as his running-mate.
Ahead of the 2022 elections, Kalonzo had threatened that he would not support Raila for the third time but later changed his tune.
“I would be foolish to support Raila Odinga without some measure of reciprocity,” Kalonzo said.
On Sunday, Odinga heaped praise on Kalonzo, describing him as loyal and supportive throughout the political turmoil and calm.
“Huyu Jamaa ana moyo, ukakamavu, jamaa ni mtu ambaye unaweza kumuamini ni mtu Mkristo. Ana tabia ya uungwana na upendo kabisa (This man has a heart, he is determined, he is also a Christian. He is a decent human being who loves others),” he said.
Raila’s statement comes against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s tour of the Nyanza region. Odinga dismissed Ruto’s forays into the region, saying.
“Anaongea juu ya Kalonzo ni kama yeye. Kalonzo anashinda Ruto mara kumi (Ruto speaks of Kalonzo as if they are equal. Kalonzo is ten times better than Ruto).”
Meanwhile, the push to rally Nyanza behind President William Ruto continues with a charm offensive by the President’s allies in the region.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo have been persistent in urging residents to support the government.
“This is the first government that takes us into account on development issues,” said Eliud Owalo.
Raila Odinga’s hint at backing Kalonzo Musyoka in the 2027 elections opens a new chapter in his succession matrix and is expected to shake up the political arena.
