5 months of pain ends as doctors remove needle left in woman’s womb

A broken needle left inside 23-year-old Evaline Wairimu during childbirth five months ago has finally been removed following an operation at Murang’a Level Five Hospital.

This is her fourth surgery in three weeks.

Evaline was left with a needle in her birth canal after a normal delivery of her first child at Kirwara Sub County Hospital in Gatanga Constituency.

“It was a normal delivery and as the doctor was stitching me up after a tear, the needle broke and brought nothing but pain to my life for the next few months,” she explained earlier.

“In May, after the birth of my son, I developed a mysterious pain that would not go away, it made walking and sleeping a very painful affair, so I ended up sitting all night,” she said.

At first she thought it might be from the wound she had after giving birth.

But after months of unexplained pain, she was “horrified” by what she saw on the x-ray.

X-rays and CT scans taken at Thika Level 5 Hospital revealed that she had a broken needle inside her.

She went back to the same Kirwara hospital where she was operated on again, but they were unable to remove the broken surgical needle.

She was later transferred to Maragwa Hospital where she was taken to the operating theatre twice but the surgeons were also unable to remove the needle.

Finally, after Nation Media Group’s NTV and Daily Nation carried her heartbreaking story, help came when she was transferred to Murang’a Level Five Hospital thanks to the intervention of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kangata.

The fourth time was the charm as Evaline successfully underwent her fourth corrective surgery. A team of doctors led by Dr Grace Wanjiku and Dr Edwin Mogere performed the operation that resulted in the successful removal of the needle during an hour-long procedure on Monday.

Governor Kang’ata praised the doctors and promised to sponsor them on a study tour to India.

“Congratulations to Murang’a County Level 5 hospital staff. They successfully removed Ms Wairimu foreign object that had stuck in her body. The County will sponsor the two leading doctors for a study tour in India,” he said on his social media pages.

Meanwhile, Kang’ata has suspended the Kirwara doctor involved in the botched operation pending formal disciplinary proceedings, which will begin after the patient recovers and is able to make a statement.

Evaline, who was discharged from hospital on Tuesday to recover at home, said she was relieved that the needle had finally been removed, although she was still in pain from the recent operation.

“It took less than an hour for it to be removed, I am still struggling to walk or sleep because of the pain in the wound as I had to undergo another operation,” she told the Nation on the phone.

“My hope and prayer was that the broken needle would be removed to end my pain and misery, I thank God the prayer was answered,” she added.

Asked if she would take legal action against the hospital and the doctor, Evaline said she was still considering it, but that she needed to be compensated for what she had been put through to remind doctors to be keen and careful when dealing with patients.
