CS Kindiki says passport printers will run 24 hours a day
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has pledged to address the substantial backlog of more than 40,000 unprocessed passports within a span of 10 days.
This commitment was made during a meeting between Professor Kindiki and senior officers from the immigration department at Nyayo House. The meeting was convened in response to mounting complaints from Kenyan citizens regarding the protracted delays in passport issuance.
Kindiki had previously faced probing questions from the regional integration committee at Parliament buildings concerning the situation at Nyayo House. In response, Kindiki asserted that the passport printing machines at Nyayo House would operate continuously until the backlog was cleared.
During his prior appearance before the regional integration committee on August 24th, Kindiki had acknowledged the presence of corrupt officials within the immigration department who were illicitly soliciting and accepting bribes for government services that should inherently be provided free of charge.
In light of his impromptu visit to Nyayo House, Kindiki reported that queues had noticeably shortened, and processing times had improved.
He disclosed that there was an existing backlog of slightly over 58,000 passport applications, with a printing capacity of about 5,000 passports daily. The Cabinet Secretary outlined his plans to streamline passport issuance, with the goal of reducing the processing time to just seven days initially and, eventually, to three days.
In addition to passport delays, there were significant challenges with the issuance of Good Conduct certificates at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters. Some applications dating back over eight months remained unresolved. In response, Professor Kithure Kindiki directed the DCI to upgrade its system from the current one to a more efficient multi-biometric identification system.
During his visit, Kindiki conducted an assessment of the processes contributing to the paralysis in the issuance of police clearance documents over several months.
He held discussions with top DCI officials, led by Director Mohammed Amin, to devise plans to restore normalcy.
