Raila wanted to breach protocol at KICC, Gachagua claims
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga attempted to overstep protocol during his attendance at the Africa Climate Summit held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) earlier this week.
Gachagua, speaking during a recent funeral ceremony in Kericho County, suggested that Raila Odinga sought to break protocol by attempting to sit alongside elected heads of state, contrary to his assigned seat.
“The other day he came to KICC, I welcomed him nicely, respectfully, you all saw it. He is our elder and honored our invitation. But instead of going to his assigned seat, he wanted to sit where other heads of state were seated, even though he is not an elected leader,” Gachagua stated.
He further expressed confusion regarding Raila’s actions, given the stringent access restrictions to the area in question, which is typically reserved exclusively for heads of state.
“In that area, even a cabinet secretary like Kipchumba Murkomen could not be allowed to access; it’s only heads of state. Now we were wondering who elected him,” Gachagua remarked.
Philip Etale, the Communications Director of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, earlier suggested that the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, led by Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, had initially denied Raila Odinga accreditation for the summit.
“The Ministry of Environment had refused to give accreditation to him, but the African Union and the United Nations insisted that Baba (a term of respect for Raila Odinga) must attend this very important Summit,” Etale claimed.
Upon Raila’s arrival at KICC, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo issued a statement outlining access restrictions, which Etale believed were prompted by Raila’s unexpected presence.
“Access to Tsavo, Aberdares, and Lenana ballrooms will only be granted to the delegates accredited to enter the first ballroom, Tsavo,” part of the statement read.
Etale suggested that this statement was a reaction to Raila’s unanticipated appearance, remarking, “Mr. Raymond Omollo has decided to issue a statement… the fear of Baba.”
However, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua maintained that Raila Odinga was indeed an invited guest, and his designated seat was situated four rows away from Gachagua’s own, where he was observed sitting beside Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
