Drug with ‘zombie’-like symptoms in viral Coast video not Fentanyl, Nacada says
In August, a wave of concern swept across the nation as alarming videos circulated online depicting individuals allegedly suffering from the effects of a suspected substance abuse.
The videos, characterised by individuals displaying symptoms like drowsiness, sedation, confusion, and ‘zombie-like’ behavior, raised significant public alarm.
It was speculated that the drug in question was fentanyl.
Even so, the the lead agency responsible for coordinating matters related to alcohol and drug abuse, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada), has said that the drug samples were meticulously analysed and identified by the Government Chemist and the results of the analysis indicate that, as of now, there have been no reported cases of Fentanyl in the country.
“First, during the fact-finding mission, twenty (20) samples in various forms were collected in three (3) counties of the Coast region and handed over to the Government Chemist for analysis and identification. From the findings, we can comfortably report that so far we do not have any reported Fentanyl case in the country, ” John Muteti, NACADA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer said.
“Our diligent efforts, in collaboration with our partners and the Government Chemist, have yielded valuable insights into this matter. The absence of fentanyl in these samples is an encouraging development for our nation’s wellbeing.”
Nacada now says its preliminary findings discovered that the zombie like symptoms among drug users can be attributed to either one or a combination of high dosage of heroin, prescription drugs especially Diazepam and Amitriptyline, methadone with heroin, or combination of heroin and Xylazine, which is a veterinary animal tranquilizer
