It’s on: Governor Nyong’o reverses suspension of demos in Kisumu
Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has rescinded a statement he made earlier in which he urged for the county’s anti-government protests to be put on hold.
Nyong’o announced that he and his supporters would take part in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party demonstrations in the county in a fresh statement on March 29, 2023.
According to the governor, Kisumu residents are still devoted to Kenyans’ freedom to peacefully congregate, petition, and demonstrate against the government.
“After consultations with the national leadership of Azimio, we want to assure you that we in Azimio believe in the rights of Kenyans to peacefully assembly, petition and demonstrate against the government,” said Governor Nyong’o.
“We are encouraged by the resolve of our people to continue the demonstrations tomorrow, we have been urged to continue with peaceful demos tomorrow. We know goons have been hired by our opponents to cause chaos and loot property as they have done…” he added
He also stated that they are seeking justice for their leader, Raila Odinga, who claims that the 2022 presidential election was rigged.
Nyong’o had earlier suspended the protests in Kisumu indefinitely, stating that the protestors would join others in Nairobi.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja responded to his statement by requesting that he not bring protestors into the capital.
The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has staged nationwide protests to put pressure on the government to address their concerns. They have also called for international intervention and sanctions against the Kwanza regime in Kenya.
Nyong’o urged Kisumu residents to collaborate with law enforcement officers to keep the county safe and secure.
