Maandamano Monday aftermath: 238 people arrested, 31 cops injured – NPS
The Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has reiterated that Monday’s demonstrations led by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga were illegal.
The IG noted that the protest quickly turned violent, with protesters engaging in running battles with anti-riot police officers and barricading roads, hindering freedom of movement for law-abiding citizens.
“We therefore condemn in the strongest terms possible, the unwarranted violence that was meted against our Officers discharging their official duties,” reads the press statement in part.
IG Koome added that the police were forced to use force to prevent the protesters from accessing Central Business Districts of Nairobi and Kisumu, resulting in the arrest of 25 people, 7 officers injured in Nyanza, 10 police vehicles damaged, and 24 officers injured in Nairobi, while 213 people were arrested.
Koome addressed the death of a third year Maseno University student saying they have began investigating the matter.
Koome commended the police saying, “Our Officers executed their national security mandate professionally; upholding the rule of law and utmost respect for human rights.”
