Muslim community condemns Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ+
The recent ruling by the Supreme Court to allow registration of gays and lesbians lobby has been met with strong opposition from the Muslim community, who have condemned the judgment in the strongest terms possible.
The Committee of Jamia Mosque Nairobi, representing the Muslim community, issued a press release stating that the ruling was “shocking, unbecoming, and totally unacceptable.”
The group expressed concerns about insidious plans to promote the homosexual agenda to young minds in schools and the selling of children’s books in leading bookshops advocating for homosexuality.
The Supreme Court’s decision follows a ruling made in 2013 by lower courts, which denied members of the LGBTQ community in Kenya the right to register a Non-Governmental Organisation for the advancement of their rights.
The recent ruling found that the decision to deny LGBTQ members their right to register as an NGO, despite homosexuality being illegal, was discriminatory.
However, the Muslim community expressed concerns that the ruling would have detrimental effects on religious, cultural, and family traditions, which have formed the bedrock of societal relations for centuries.
“The vast majority of Kenyans adhere to Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs, and a common factor in all these beliefs is that homosexuality is immoral, repugnant, and a criminal act that cannot be tolerated in Kenyan societies,” said the Committee of Jamia Mosque Nairobi in their statement.
The Muslim community has vowed to resist the ruling and called on Members of Parliament to come up with clear legislation to further criminalize homosexual relationships in the Constitution and Acts of Parliament.
The Muslim community through its secretary general AbdulBari Hamid also appealed to President William Ruto to unequivocally stand against what they consider to be the promotion of the homosexual agenda.
“We are calling upon other faith groups and Kenyans of goodwill to come together in a unified voice to fight against these machinations, which if left to thrive, will threaten to tear apart long-standing societal values and the institution of marriage and the family as we know it,” said the Jamia Mosque Community.
