I can dream again: Joy as 31 learners unable to join form 1 get scholarships

As the government through the Ministry of Education pushes for 100 % transition from primary to secondary, thousands of learners are still stranded at home due to challenges of raising school fees.

But for 31 learners who missed joining secondary school three weeks ago their hope to scale high in education has been renewed after they got scholarships from Affecto Foundation, a non-profit organization registered in Kenya through Watoto Wasome program.

According to the team leader and founder Ndung’u Nyoro the learners who qualified to join the program were picked from across the country after applying and undergoing a vetting exercise to ascertain they deserve.

Nyoro said that brilliant children and who have excelled well in KCPE end up of living hopeless lives after they fail to proceed with education due to poverty, it’s through Watoto Wasome program which was started six years ago that 150 learners have been supported through high school education and 50 learners have transitioned to various universities across the country.

Among the beneficiary Rosalia Nekesa from Bungoma county who scored 364 marks and was admitted to St Marys Kibabii girls, Nekesa was not lucky as she was sent home a few days after reporting to the school.

Her grandfather who had accompanied her from Bungoma to Ruiru where the Affecto foundation offices are, said she had only paid KES 2,000 hoping to get more money and pay the rest of the school fees. Her grandaughter was, however, sent home forcing him to look for more aid.

Nekesa promised to work hard and pursue her career ofbecoming a medical doctor.

Joy Wanjiru f rom Kayole in Nairobi, who scored 408marks, will also be joining the St Teresa Mbooni Girls after the foundation came to her rescue, her mother who preaches in Matatus could not hide her joy after her third-born daughter qualified for the scholarship.

Abdulahi Mohamed and his wife Habiba Maalim, from Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Nairobi had two kids who did their KCPE last year but due to poverty they could not afford even a coin to take their son and daughter to the school of their choice.

However, their son Mohamed Abdulahi got the scholarship and was able to join form one, leaving their daughter Iftar Abdulahi, who scored 389marks. Through Affecto Foundation Iftar will be joining St Teresa Girls Secondary School in Kapenguria.

Even after scoring 410 marks Derrick Ouma was not able to report to Maranda Boys High School, his hopes of becoming a pilot were however revived after joining the Watoto Wasome program, this after his father who is a boda boda rider could not afford the school fees required. All the learners will be joining school next week after they were issued with bank cheques.
