21 families left homeless by daytime fire in Isiolo
Twenty-one families in Bulawaso village, in Isiolo County, have been rendered homeless following a daytime fire that reduced their houses to ashes.
According to area residents, the fire broke out at around noon, starting from one of the houses, and spreading quickly to the neighboring houses as they made frantic calls to the County fire department personnel who failed to turn up.
No household items were salvaged as tenants had locked their houses, and were away in their various workstations. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Patrick Muniaru, a youth leader in Bulapesa hit out at the County Leadership for failure to address pertinent challenges that derail response to disasters such as fires, with the County Fire Engine failing to help on numerous occasions.
He made an appeal to the County department of special programmes, the Kenya Red Cross and other well-wishers to move in with speed and help the affected families, who now do not have a place to sleep, food and clothing, having lost all their belongings to the inferno.
Joseph Mwenda, a resident of Bulawaso village slammed the Isiolo County Leaders and the Isiolo Water and Sanitation Company for lack of adequate supply of water, which locals would have used to put out the fire in the absence of the firefighters.
He argued that taps in the area had remained dry for close to two weeks and that there was no water around when the fire tragedy struck.
The residents are now calling upon the County governor Abdi Guyo to quickly find a solution to the challenges bedeviling the County Fire Department, as the fire engine operators fail to turn up with flimsy excuses that the engine does not have water.
Just a week ago, yet another fire broke out in the Lower Bulapesa area, and the firefighters arrived in time but could not put out the fire since the pipes that were supposed to direct the water were worn out and poured the water in several directions.
Mwenda noted that the Isiolo town area has three fire engines, one belonging to the County Government, one for the military (78th tank battalion) and one for the Isiolo Airport. Yet, none of the fire engines respond to fire emergencies in the area.
