Waiguru pledges to build first exclusive fish market, distributes 250,000 fingerlings

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has distributed 254,000 fish fingerlings to 254 farmers in an effort to encourage aquaculture as a main source of livelihood instead of an alternative one.

To support this effort, Waiguru said the government will be setting up a dedicated fish market in Kiaga, Ndia Constituency, where farmers can aggregate their produce for sale.

The initiative is part of the county’s Wezesha Kirinyaga economic empowerment program, initiated by the governor.

“Fish farming will provide an extra income stream for our farmers and give direct support to women and youth who will be involved at various stages of the project value chain,” said governor Waiguru.

Governor Waiguru noted that aquaculture will help bridge the deficit of fish supply in Kenya, as half of the fish produced in the country comes from aquaculture and the other half from ocean and lake fishing.

The county is planning to set up a processing factory in the Sagana Industrial Park, which will deal with fish processing and will provide farmers with the opportunity for value addition to their produce.

Waiguru’s vision is to see Kirinyaga take advantage of its favorable aquaculture conditions, including freshwater and a ready market, to increase annual fish production from its current 29.4 tons to 62 tons, which would bring in around KES 30 million per year for farmers. To support this goal, the county government has been providing farmers with free fishpond liners, fingerlings, and six months of fish feed. In return, the farmers construct the fishponds and care for the fish until they reach maturity.

The County Executive Committee member for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. John Gachara, stated that the first phase of the aquaculture program was launched in 2019 and farmers who received support then are now able to produce fish independently. This ongoing phase is supporting beneficiaries at various stages of the aquaculture value chain. Youth have not been excluded from the program, as 207 young men and women have been trained and will be funded to set up fish-related enterprises such as eateries, transportation businesses, and fish feed production cottage industries.

Fish farmers will be forming Smallholder Aquaculture Groups (SAGs) and eventually a Fish Farmers Cooperative Society to streamline marketing of their produce. Farmer Stanley Munene Muthigani from Kiini ward in Ndia constituency, who received 1,000 fingerlings, stated that fish farming is a highly profitable and time-efficient venture that is suitable for those with small parcels of land.

The county government is also taking steps to popularize fish consumption and create awareness of its importance as a source of protein. The government will be organizing fish eating festivals and training farmers on how to grow crops such as bananas and vegetables around the fishponds for domestic use or sale.

Kirinyaga was ranked number five in the National Aquaculture Annual Stakeholders Review meeting held a year ago, based on the implementation of the Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP).
