Inside the divided house of Jubilee
The Jubilee Party has been hit by a major split, with two factions emerging and disciplinary actions being taken against senior party members.
On Friday, Jubilee Chairman, Nelson Dzuya, issued a statement announcing the suspension of several top officials, including the party’s National Vice-Chairman, David Murathe, Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni, and National Treasurer, Kagwe Gichohi, citing “laxity and misconduct.”
In a swift move, disciplinary letters were also released by the party’s Facebook account, signed by Kioni, the Chairperson of Jubilee’s Disciplinary Committee, and addressed to several Jubilee MPs who had visited State House on Wednesday.
The MPs, who are accused of acting in a manner disloyal to the Jubilee Party and advancing positions that are contrary to the party’s stance, have had their cases referred to the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution mechanism for further determination.
Kioni said, “We are in receipt of a petition from one of our members of the party accusing you of among other things: acting in a manner disloyal to the Jubilee Party and advanced positions that are contrary to the position of the party.”
It went on to say, “This is to notify you that the said petition has been forwarded to the Party Disciplinary Committee as provided for by our Party Constitution to process and they will be contacting you in due course.”
The MPs who visited State House are; Azimio Senate Deputy Minority Leader Fatuma Dullo, nominated MP Sabina Chege, EALA MP Kanini Kega, and Adan Keynan (Eldas), MPs David Kiaraho (Ol Kalou), Irene Njoki (Bahati), Zachary Kwenya (Kinangop), Shadrack Mwiti (South Imenti), Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Amos Mwago (Starehe), Dan Karitho (Igembe Central), Stanley Muthama (Lamu West) and Joseph Githuku (Lamu), Omar Shurie (Balambala), and John Waluke (Sirisia).
However, Kioni has downplayed the reports of his suspension, maintaining that he is still the Jubilee Secretary General and that the party remains firmly in Azimio.
In a rejoinder, Kioni accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of buying out Azimio politicians in a bid to weaken the opposition.
“Those in State House and elsewhere have started a dangerous plot to ensure they weaken the opposition by buying out Azimio parties. We know that a small group led by those who went to State House the other day has met in Nakuru and said that Jubilee has bolted out of Azimio. That is a lie. I am here as the Jubilee Secretary General,” Kioni told Nation.
The move to suspend senior party members and to discipline the Jubilee MPs follows a similar call by Orange Democratic Party’s leader, Raila Odinga, on legislators who had also visited State House.
The split in Jubilee Party comes as the opposition intensifies its anti-government protests and it remains unclear what direction the party will head in. All eyes are now on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to see his reaction to the matter.
