KDF to use development, not force, to combat insecurity in Baringo County
A multi-agency team led by Major General David Tarus of the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) has announced a new approach to addressing insecurity in Baringo County, which has been plagued by banditry for over four decades.
Rather than relying on force, the team will focus on bringing development and dialogue to the region in an effort to mitigate the root causes of the problem.
Speaking on Friday, January 7, during a meeting with local leaders and administrators, Tarus said that the KDF will work to connect remote areas through the construction of roads and other infrastructure, in order to boost economic activity and provide security for the locals.
“We open up the roads that lead to Turkana, West Pokot, and Nakuru so that it is easy for the security personnel to move and for the civilians to trade and perform other economic activities,” Tarus said.
He added, “We are really not going to do KDF operations. We want to tell the residents that the security apparatus deployed here will help provide security for the locals to do business.”
The multi-agency team comprising the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, local security leadership, and leaders, is seeking to end insecurity which has been in existence for three decades.
Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamaket welcomed the move, saying that the region has been neglected in terms of development by previous governments. Other leaders also called for the construction of schools, churches, and health centers.
The announcement comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki hinted at the possibility of involving the military in efforts to combat banditry and insecurity.
President William Ruto has also committed to using all available means to curb bandit attacks and ensure the safety of citizens.
“I have instructed security agencies to deal firmly, decisively, and conclusively with those involved. Cattle rustling will stop na sio tafadhali,” Ruto warned.
