Politicians to watch in 2023

Kenyan politics in 2023, which will mark President William Ruto’s first year in office, is expected to be very interesting.

Ruto has assembled a team to assist him in achieving the many goals that were part of his campaigns and others that he continues to make.

In addition, he will be monitored by a different team, that in the opposition, to make sure he serves and delivers as promised to Kenyans.

These ten leaders should be on your radar in 2023.

Raila Odinga

In Kenya, he has been the opposition leader for the longest. The odds went against him, but his fifth attempt to become Kenya’s president was thought to be the closest.

The former prime minister has taken the initiative to reclaim his position in the opposition and has been vocal in his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, despite having publicly stated that he does not accept the results of the general election held on August 9.

Raila Odinga has grown accustomed to criticizing a number of policies put forth by the Ruto administration, including the hustler fund, the establishment of the office of the opposition, and other proposed constitutional amendments.

He wants a number of issues resolved, and he is not likely to give up: the state of the economy, the drought, and the high cost of living.

In an effort to hold the government accountable, he has already announced and begun consultative forums with Kenyans.

Kalonzo Musyoka

After the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition team failed to win the Presidency on August 9, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka became the face and voice of the opposition in Kenyan politics.

This continued until Raila Odinga reclaimed the reins and began holding press conferences. Kalonzo has seemingly vanished.

His visibility had eclipsed that of the coalition’s leader Raila Odinga who lost to President William Ruto in the hotly contested poll.

With Odinga’s advancing years, it’s important to keep an eye on the elections in 2027. Kalonzo has had efforts to run for the presidency and he will undoubtedly position himself again.

The next year will definitely give us a clue of his intentions in the future.

Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u

The African Economic Research Consortium researcher and economist made a comeback to government service as one of the few technocrats in President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

In order for President William Ruto’s administration to be successful, he must be the man that possesses the Midas touch.

The new administration is facing pressure to cut spending due to debt, a wage bill that exceeds tax collections, and a sluggish economy brought on by national elections and external shocks.

Ndung’u is one of the important figures on whom the President will rely to carry out his bottom-up economic model and agenda.

Cs Ababu Namwamba

Sports in Kenya has been on a go-slow in the past few years, in fact, it’s almost impossible to be proud of the current state of sports.

Back when Kenya’s rugby team was at the top and had won every other major competition, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards was a match that fans eagerly anticipated. These times have long passed.

He has taken his position as Sports CS in a befitting manner and brought back FKF and the resumption of the Kenya Premier League, but, where’s the glory?

In addition to having teams compete, Namwamba is tasked with ensuring that they do so in appropriate stadiums and training grounds and moreso, well paid or properly appreciated.

His dream of having Kenya at the World Cup starts now.

Opiyo Wandayi

He is the leader in the National Assembly of the second largest party or coalition of parties and his voice matters a lot.

In the absence of his party leaders, Opiyo Wandayi has spoken out strongly about the “wrongs” in the government, and it is expected that he won’t stop.

Leaders in such a position in parliament constantly aim higher, but their current success is a crucial factor.
