Ruto’s Cabinet donates KES 17 million to drought response kitty
The Cabinet has donated slightly over KES 17 million to the ongoing drought response appeal.
The money which is the entire salary of the members of the cabinet for the month of November has been transferred to the drought relief kitty.
Through a letter sent to the Secretary of the National Steering Committee on Drought Response Murimi Murage, the Secretary to the Cabinet confirmed that more than KES 17 million had been transferred to the response kitty.
“A sum total of Seventeen million, three hundred and forty-eight thousand, six hundred and fifty-six shillings, being the sum total of collective contribution of all members of the Cabinet, is being processed and will be wired to the National Drought Mitigation Appeal Fund in due course,” reads the letter dated December 5.
The Cabinet decided to forego its salary during its third session on November 29 after being informed of the country’s drought situation.
In just a week after launching an appeal for donations, the National Steering Committee on Drought Response has collected nearly KES 590 million to supplement ongoing hunger-mitigation actions in the hardest afflicted districts.
Kenya, according to the government, needs up to KES 17 billion in mitigating measures between now and January.
The President established a 15-member National Steering Committee on Drought Response through a Special Gazette Notice, tasked with finding means to combat drought affecting over four million Kenyans in 21 counties.
