Healthcare workers come together to mitigate severe drought in Garissa
A group of healthcare workers have come together to offer free medical camps to areas in Garissa county that are worst hit by the current drought.
According to Abdiaziz Hussein, a programme coordinator at Youth for Umah organisation, many children in the far-fetched areas in Garissa County are facing severe malnutrition.
Most of the children are also unable to access medical services due to the nature of pastoralists moving from one area to the other in search of water and pasture, and the fact that many of the grazing areas have no health facilities increasing the chances of facing death.
“Due to the prolonged drought, 80% of the community have lost their livestock which was the main source of income, as a result of this they relocated to villages which has no health facilities and job opportunities which consequently lead to high rate of malnutrition of children,” Dr. Hussein said.
Dr Hussein further said that many pastoralists who get unwell always refrain from visiting health facilities and instead prefer traditional medicine.
“Many members of the society in the reserves have myths concerning non communicable diseases affecting them. For example those diagnosed with diabetes believe taking medication will make it worse and instead take traditional remedies like camel urine which have no proven scientific evidence,” he added.
“Hussein Suleiman, patient from Warable, Fafi sub-county is a case study, he came to our clinic in the free medical camp with complain of headache with no known chronic illness, upon general examination he had blood pressure of 180/110, on further checkups and examination it was confirmed he was in the state of hypertensive emergency. He was stabilised, discharge with medication and advised to be on follow up in the nearest health facility” he said.
Hussein Suleiman is a resident of Warable village in Fafi sub-county, Garissa where the camp is held and for so many years, he unknowingly suffered from severe hypertension which he says because he was most of the time going after his few livestock and preferred traditional way of cure anytime he fell sick.
The organisation is currently providing awareness of this non communicable diseases and free medication to the known and newly diagnosed patients.
