Visa Delays: US Embassay to allow online adjudication for applicants to lessen the backlog
The United States Embassy to Kenya has announced a reduction of visa interview wait time to at least two or three months.
While speaking on NTV morning show Your World, Deborah Miller, Consul General – Head of Visa Section, US Embassy, said any Kenyan with a visa that expired within the last four years can submit their documents for adjudication online without attending an interview.
She further revealed that the US government has expanded its expedited visa interview program to help those with emergency needs and increased the interviewing hours and the number of appointments available.
“If you do have an urgent need to travel to the US related to a business meeting or a conference visit our website and request an expedited appointment and be thorough with explaining why,” she said.
The decision came months after the embassy had announced the postponement of visa interview appointments until June 2024 due to excessive demand and Covid-related backlogs.
In an effort to lessen the backlog, the American Embassy dropped interview requirements for some non-immigrant applications in September.
Many Kenyans have been affected by visa delays, but the new ambassador, Meg Whitman, who arrived in Kenya in August, has promised to resolve the issue and minimise the backlog as soon as possible.
“This is one of my top priorities, and I will be working very closely with the Consular staff here as well as the entire Embassy to see how we can address this issue as fast as possible,” Whitman said.
