Stakeholders call on the government to ensure students from drought hit areas sit for exams
Various education stakeholders in Kajiado County have challenged the Ministry of Education to ensure that students from drought-affected areas sit for national exams, which will begin on November 25 and 28.
At an education stakeholders meeting in Kajiado, North Sub-county, attended by 145 exam centre managers, Ministry of Education officers, and regional security teams, the stakeholders expressed concern about the high number of candidates who have been forced to drop out of school due to the drought.
Kajiado County Education Director Kosgey Kipruto said the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), and the first batch of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams papers have reached all sub-county exam containers.
KCPE rehearsals will begin on November 25, 2022, with exams starting on November 28 and ending on November 30, 2022. The KCSE will be rehearsed on November 18 and then administered between November 21 and December 23, 2022.
According to Kosgey deployment of staff and transport logistics has been finalised. However, he said the Ministry is struggling to ensure students out of school due to drought-hit areas will be able to sit for exams and food provided during that period.
Examiners and students have been assured of increased security by Kajiado North Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Mwangi. He stated that each of the 145 exam centres will have two armed police officers to ensure that the exams run smoothly.
Kajiado County is one of the 23 counties in Kenya that have been affected by the drought. In October, the National Drought Management Authority declared that all seven sub-counties in Kajiado had been affected by the drought.
According to NDMA’s report, 110,000 households and 400,000 livestock have been affected.
