Suspected mass grave from WW1 discovered in a Voi primary school
Construction workers engaged in building a twin classroom for special needs learners at Voi Primary School special unit have discovered a suspected mass grave on the institution’s ground.
Archeology experts believe the mass grave contains the remains of thousands of undocumented African soldiers and porters who perished during World War One, which was fought between 1914 and 1918.
According to reports, the construction workers found shackles, bangles, rings, and several human bones.
National Museum of Kenya (NMK) officials however say the Voi site won’t be designated an archeological site worth exploring until it has received official verification.
The investigation to determine whether it was a mass grave from World War One had already begun, according to NMK archeologist Jambo Haro. Additionally, he said that the bones had become useless due to contamination from the construction activities going on above the site.
“This was an accidental find. Handling the bones and exposing them ruins their integrity. This compromises the accuracy when it comes to carbon dating because it cannot give us the exact epoch they belong to,” he explained.
The construction work was temporarily put on hold to prevent further contamination and give archaeologists and paleontologists time to assess whether additional research was necessary.
In the event of such a confirmation, nations that took part in the war, such as Britain, Germany, Australia, and India, would mobilize massive amounts of resources and manpower.
Archaeologist Philip Wanyama said there was a need for expertly controlled research and bone exposure. In his opinion, exposed fossils are not as safe as those found underground, unless they are exposed by experts.
In order to shed light on the owner, he added, every piece of archeological evidence will be carefully selected and recorded.
“We have human and non-human bones. The research will give us a peek into the identity and social life of the person buried here,” he said.
